Key points

  • Job openings lowest since March 2021
  • Chance of September FOMC rate hike fell to under 10%
  • 77% of tastyfx clients in USD/JPY are short

While the monthly JOLTs job openings number is not traditionally a major US data point, USD pairs have seen swings in price action following their release the past two months. At this stage in the fight against inflation, more traders are looking to the labor market for any indication of a slowdown. With job openings coming in lower than expected, markets will decide if this could be the beginning of a larger downturn, or just a seasonal slump that will soon revert.

USD/JPY may be a pair to watch as the pair fell almost 200 pips after job openings released. Still near its year-to-date highs, USD has a lot of room to fall towards its long-term mean. Recent rallies have caused 77% of USD/JPY traders to be short the pair.
